Following The Trend - Useful Tips For Conducting Stay Interviews

Introduction

It's not that uncommon for employees to think about leaving their current place of employment. To retain workers and keep them happy, management should do stay interviews. This process gives management better insight on how their workers feel about their jobs and the company. Following these useful tips for conducting stay interviews can improve work morale and keep your business thriving.

Why Stay Interviews Are Important

Most employees at some point in their career are tempted to leave or actually quit their jobs. Maybe they are looking for better pay or they feel underappreciated or overworked. Some might hear about employees' perks at another company and seriously consider joining the other company,

Stay interviews can build better relationships between management and workers and show that bosses do care. The results from stay interviews also offer input on what your company's strengths and weaknesses are and how rival companies measure up to your business, especially if your workers researched them or looked at their job openings.

The Dos and Don'ts of Stay Interviews

  • First, schedule the stay interview well in advance, so that both parties may clear their schedule that day. Interview most if not all the workers, not just the ones who you suspect are likely to leave.
  • Pick a comfortable office to do the interview.
  • Ask questions such as "What do you look forward to the most when you come to work?", "What have you learned working here?" "What have you learned working here?" and "Have you ever considered leaving the company? If so, what prompted that idea"
  • Give the employee most of the allotted time for speaking during the interview. Also let the employees know that this is not a job evaluation, so they should be honest and open with their answers.
  • Sit straight up and make good eye contact with the employee. This indicates good manners and that you're interested in what they have to say.
  • Take notes of significant answers to the questions.

What To Do Afterwards

After the interview, the interviewer should thank the worker for their time and shake their hand. Let them know that you appreciate their honesty and that their input will be shared with the rest of management. Let the employees know their concerns will be addressed, but don't make any promises on actual changes.

Once all the stay interviews are completed, management should compare their notes and look for trends in common concerns and compliments. Decide which actions, if any, need to be taken. Send a follow-up email to the employees to once again thank them for their time and give updates on any concerns the employees addressed. You should also thank the employees for their hard work and loyalty and say you hope they continue to work at your company for years to come.
